Montana 1948 Character Analysis

David is a 12 year old boy from a small town called Bentrock in Montana, David has a very confined personality, in other words he has to watch what he says or does because of the name he was given at birth as a Hayden- a very respectable name in his home town as his father is the sheriff, Uncle a doctor and his grandfather like his father was sheriff also.During the year of 1948 David as a young boy got caught up in all the drama of his Uncle’s sins molesting Indian women, when David eaves drops and hears about what his uncle had done is the major turning point for him, he is no longer a little kid but now after his opinions of his family had changed he had lost all his innocence and was left in the middle of the situation. After finding out about his Uncles assaults on Indian women, David see’s his uncle leaving the house whilst in the neighbours outhouse through a peep hole, that day when arriving home he finds that Marie Little Soldier had been murdered, Marie is an I ndian that works in his home and had made the accusations on his uncle, David loved Marie in a young boy sort of way as there was only one kind of love for a 12 year old boy, She was young and beautiful and understood David. After David’s father had imprisoned his uncle in his basement, four men that worked for David’s Grandfather arrived at his home willing to jail break his Uncle, David’s mother shot a warning fire in order to scare them away from the house but they didn’t budge so Len Mcauley, David’s neighbour whom David thought was in love with his mother came over and pointed his gun at them ordering them away from the home and scared them off. David’s mother then hugged him thankfully and asked for David to join them, but for David it looked unfaithful so he stood there with his fathers gun so it didn’t look bad if his father emerged. After this scene David’s mother ordered her brother in law to be freed for the safety of her family and home, that night David heard his uncle smashing glasses from the cellar and awoke the next day to find later in the morning his father hugging his dead brother with gashes on both his wrists in a pool of blood, after this situation David was relieved for the fact that there would be no trial, no more women molested, no bad name put to his family and no more trouble, he was thankful to his uncle but that was not the end of it.David’s Grandfather practically disowned the family making in unbearable to live in Bentrock no longer than a few months after his uncle’s death David’s family moved away. Wesley HaydenWesley Hayden is David Hayden’s father, was born in 1910 in mercer county, when he was a teenager a horse kicked his leg, breaking it giving him a permanent limp in the shape of a V so we know that he is disabled, in the early twenties Wesley and his family moved to Bentrock and lived on a cattle ranch just outside on Bentrock, Wesley gra duated from the university of north Dakota law school, and he was a member of both the North Dakota and Montana state bar association his wife believed that the family would be better if he had a career as an attorney but his father Julian Hayden wanted to keep the family name and popularity going on in the family and passed his job as Sheriff down to his eldest son Wesley.I see Wesley Hayden as a pushover, he pushed a rewarding career away because his father had told him to and he went to law school because his wife told him to as well. In the novel Wesley is put in a very, very difficult situation by having to convict his own brother for the assaults on Indian woman during his appointments at the reserve- at first Wesley believes the accusations but tries to cover up the situation by making up excuses for his brother, but is then pushed by his wife to take action, if Wesley hadn’t been pushed to take action he never would have. This is a major turning point for Wesley as we ll as David because it’s a big thing and he knows that it’s wrong and has no choice not to do anything because he is the sheriff and his wife is very strong on her beliefs.Another turning point in the novel for Wesley is when his son tells him that he had seen his brother leaving the house the afternoon that Marie had died; this is a huge turning point because now Wesley has to do something major about the situation because it’s not something that you can just brush off, Wesley has to find Indian women to testify against his brother, but has then run out of options and decides to imprison his brother in the basement to save the embarrassment of his brother. When Wesley’s father finds out that his son is being imprisoned in his other sons home he demands for him to be freed but when he is refused, he sounds 4 men that work on his ranch to break him free. After Wesley’s brother commits suicide in his basement, Wesley’s father disowns him as a son and loses contact with him. Wesley, his wife and his son move to Fargo when Wesley’s wife decides that she wants to move out of Bentrock. Dies from cancer. Gail Hayden Wesley Hayden’s wife and David Hayden’s mother, from Eastern ND in the Red River Valley, Wanted her husband to be himself and not a Hayden.Wanted to move back to North Dakota Concerned about David's values, Wished for a larger community to raise David in, one not so easily escapable, Worked as a sceretary in the Register Deeds Office at the courthouse across the street from the Hayden home. Gail Hayden is a very stern and faithful woman, she is very well mannered and has one son (David), David’s birth was very difficult for her so she had only decided to have one son. The turning point for Gail is also the same turning point as her son and husbands, even though she doesn’t know what her son knows, she tries to keep it as much as a secret from him because he is only twelve years o ld. One problem that Gail is faced with is protecting her home from her father-in-laws men, she is forced to fire warning shots, this is very weird for Gail because she is very well mannered and a lady so it’s very unexpected. At the end of the novel when Gail asks to move away from Bentrock we know its because 2 people had died in her own home and it would be a great way to start fresh without people talking about them in Bentrock. Gail dies from a heart attack Frank hayden David's uncle, war hero, doctor, witty, charismatic, charming, rapist, two- faced. He had been a star athlete in high school and college, During WWII on a Pacific Island, he carried three soldiers to safety. He is a killer and committed suicide. In the beginning of the novel frank is the bigger person compared to Wesley, he is more handsome, charming and he is a war hero with a very rewarding profession besides the fact that he uses it for the wrong reasons. The big turning point for Frank is when he finds out that Marie had told on him for accusations of rape and assualt

Admission Essay for Counseling Psychology Program

My country, Serbia, underwent a period of terror and wars, especially during the NATO Bombing in 1999. This marking event in our history taught me more than what my formal education could. Before this disaster struck, I was a full-time student and the University of Pristina majoring in English Language and Literature. During the high of political upheavals, the situation in Kosovo was already tense.Minorities had constant provocations, and hatred had a firm imprint on the people. My life was heavily influenced, as well as my education. I had experienced first hand what it means to be â€Å"persona non grate† in the your childhood community.I wished everyone could understand what this meant for all of us, regardless of who we were and where we came from. Being prosecuted and not having the right to enjoy our college days was a sour memory, but something I live by as a source of my strength. I experienced biases and prejudice, yet I stand firm.I was treated badly, but my dreams never blurred from my sight. I was emotionally affected, but I was more inspired to pursue these dreams, and become a counselor. Freedom in this country was taken for granted, and our college life overlooked. The war made it necessary for me to leave Pristina and Kosovo. Shocked and scared, I came back to a home where fires, bombings and NATO planes assailed my daily itinerary. The screeching sirens did not help our situation. It seemed that we merely waited for the bomb to drop on our heads and defy us from mere existence.During all the madness, I tried to suppress my stress by being optimistic for my family and friends.   As a child, I have been my family's â€Å"corrupter of words†, as I've always seen myself as one of Shakespeare’s fools. My mom always pointed out my ability to rearrange words and it's meanings to create a personal â€Å"philosophical† statement.I would often add humor when the our lives would seem bland, other times when we feel the panic crawling through our bones, and fear completely etching our faces. The bombings taught us this.As you watch the planes every day, you'd get to realize that there are things you can do as not to be so stressed. Since we could not prevent the many disasters in our lives, we can re-frame the fear and pain to something more positive. The idea was to live your life as normally as possible, by teaching yourself to be blind of some of the negative events in our lives. It wasn't all that bad during those terrifying days. There were positive outcomes as well, like in social gatherings where the unique humor and spirit in my culture gave me a good faith and optimism to survive next days. If I couldn’t eliminate stress by changing or ignoring the situation, the least I could do was offer social support. My profound interest in teaching English to people of different languages didn’t falter due to the war. It allowed me to complete my education on time, and start my career as an Eng lish teacher. In the classroom, it is particularly important for me to understand the point of view of the student, and use humor and real-life situations to get my points across.I developed my interest in researching about language through my undergraduate studies. My greater interest is on how sociocultural factors have an impact on the awareness, design, implementation, and assessment of a second language in a multicultural community, in comparison to those in culturally homogeneous communities.ESL classes in Serbia were more British oriented, both in linguistics and culture. As a young teacher, I have always been open to new teaching methods. I also tried to add novelties into the curriculum. My decision to spend a year in the United States was supported by my desire to learn more about the American culture.I believe this will broaden my perspectives on cultural diversity and different systems of education. Furthermore, this will heighten my personal and professional development . I can say that life can be very unpredictable because my one year visit become a life of adventure and possibilities by studying psychology. You would know if you are experiencing life if the wind pushes you in all directions. My senses were surrounded with uncertainty as I involved myself in a different culture. I knew how it felt to be a little fish in a big pond. Being an international student from Eastern Europe did not prepare me for the many interesting things a new country can offer me.The initial knowledge gained from textbooks, and the places I've traveled to see, were put to waste as I stepped onto unknown territory. I felt helpless, and wanted desperately to go home. I could have been with my family, a cup of cappuccino and the newspaper within my grasps. However, even though I experienced culture shock, I believe hands-on education is still the best teacher.Soon after arriving in a new country, I was caught between my old values from my native culture, and the new value s of the host culture. I was pressured to adapt in order to survive. Adjusting to a new culture, new system, and new life, was not an easy task. But my ability to adapt allowed me to face any obstacle. My goals were always set whenever I face any challenge. I never let my self-esteem falter.I love to feel challenged because it makes me work twice as hard. I proved this by obtaining my second undergraduate degree (BA in Liberal Arts/Psychology) and graduating with the highest honors.   I always tried to reach for the stars.   But the opposite side of the coin is nostalgia. Something that is present when I am working, studying, eating, and even when sleeping.Being an international student among fellow foreigners in the US made me realize how much social support and understanding was necessary to challenge and achieve academically in other countries. By considering the problems students have in the US, and by developing different approaches and solutions, I believe I can be a great counselor in a multicultural world. Just by the thought of it made me eager to learn more, and increase the repertoire of counseling styles and skills alongside others.During my senior year of college, I conducted an extensive literature review on â€Å"psychosocial adjustment issues of international students and the need for social support†. I refined my research skills in data analysis using SPSS, as well as my ability to present my findings in the manner of an accepted professional research paper.I enjoyed conducting the literature review the most, approaching it as a scavenger hunt and considering the quantity and quality of information found as my reward. This project, along with my other undergraduate studies, prepared me for the rigors of graduate study and the parameters of successful research. Professional experiences, research, and undergraduate courses at Menlo College have further stimulated my interest in psychology and reinforced my conviction that I am well su ited to the field.Although these varied research experiences have provided me with fundamental skills, I still feel the need for more training. In retrospect, college was one of the most stimulating periods in my life, and I found tremendous determination to achieve my goal of helping others through the study of psychology.Looking from the prospective of a student gave me more retrospection on my teaching profession, which I love so much.   However, life is an intriguing railroad with many stations.   Some of those stations I got off at were good experiences and some bad. But over all, it has been a journey that continues on.Helping others reach their goals, having a positive attitude, and dedicating both personal and professional growth were the traits I held when I entered Menlo College.   They remain as an integral part of my work ethic today. My international student experience, and many research projects, have helped me achieve a theoretical foundation for the important wo rk of helping students succeed in college. We must have an understanding and compassion for diverse student populations. I learned this from the years of teaching experience. Furthermore, I am able to demonstrate my strengths and abilities to relate effectively with individuals from all levels and cultural backgrounds. These experiences have not only taught me valuable lessons about student life, but have also reinforced my interest in pursuing my career in counseling psychology. Graduate school will enable me to develop vital research and counseling skills, and the solid academic background that I need to be a successful counselor and researcher.A master's program in counseling psychology will not only cultivate and refine my involvement in research, but also equip me to deal with the challenges of an MS program. The combination of MFT and my counseling degree will enable me to fulfill my career aspirations and passion for helping students in need. Furthermore, I can prepare myself in facing the complexity of psychotherapy and unpredictability when dealing with emotional issues of individuals and their families.I have all the traits needed to be a good counselor. Undoubtedly, my devotion to my education will be the greatest asset of all. Being able to successfully help   individuals in the future will be my greatest reward for the effort and investment I will put myself into

Managerial Finance Essay

You have been at your job with East Coast Yachts for a week now and have decided you need to sign up for the company’s 401(k) plan. Even after your discussion with Sarah Brown, the Bledsoe Financial Services representative, you are still unsure as to which investment option you should choose. Recall that the options available to you are stock in East Coast Yachts, the Bledsoe S&P 500 Index Fund, the Bledsoe Small-Cap Fund, the Bledsoe Large-Company Stock Fund, the Bledsoe Bond Fund, and the Bledsoe Money Market Fund. You have decided that you should invest in a diversified portfolio, with 70 percent of your investment in equity, 25 percent in bonds, and 5 percent in the money market fund. You have also decided to focus your equity investment on large-cap stocks, but you are debating whether to select the S&P 500 Index Fund or the Large-Company Stock Fund. In thinking it over, you understand the basic difference in the two funds. One is a purely passive fund that replicates a widely followed large-cap index, the S&P 500, and has low fees. The other is actively managed with the intention that the skill of the portfolio manager will result in improved performance relative to an index. Fees are higher in the latter fund. You’re just not certain on which way to go, so you ask Dan Ervin, who works in the company’s finance area, for advice. After discussing your concerns, Dan gives you some information comparing the performance of equity mutual funds and the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. The Vanguard 500 is the world’s largest equity index mutual fund. It replicates the S&P 500, and its return is only negligibly different from the S&P 500. Fees are very low. As a result, the Vanguard 500 is essentially identical to the Bledsoe S&P 500 Index Fund offered in the 401(k) plan, but it has been in existence for much longer, so you can study its track record for over two decades. The graph below summarizes Dan’s comments by showing the percentage of equity mutual funds that outperformed the Vanguard 500 Fund over the previous ten years. So for example, from January 1977 to December 1986, almost 70 percent of equity mutual funds outperformed the Vanguard 500. Dan suggests that you study the graph and answer the following questions: 1. What implications do you draw from the graph for mutual fund investors? If I was to draw any implications from the graph for mutual fund investors it would be an expectation that the investors will outperform the market. As with any business the high performers will continue performing and the low performers will be let go. If we were looking at the level of market efficiency it would be expected that mutual funds would outperform the market. It is expected that half of all investors will outperform the market. 2. Is the graph consistent or inconsistent with market efficiency? Explain carefully. I believe that the graph shows consistency with market efficiency, but even the most efficient of markets must be willing to spend on research to outperform the market and even then many investors do not outperform the market. The graph is consistent with market efficiency because if even the highest performers are not outperforming the market, even with high financing, then as would be expected average investors will not be outperforming the market. 3. What investment decision would you make for the equity portion of your 401(k) account? Why? If I was to make an investment decision based on the equity portion of this 401K plan I would choose to invest in the S&P 500 index. There should also be investments made in small cap funds as this will help diversify the portfolio. Small cap funds however are not available as an option so the S&P 500 would be the best choice as an investment decision.

Religion - Essay Example The experience is the troubles that people encounter and eventually abandons their old living habits and follows what their religion teaches them. In the section, â€Å"Theories of religion† (starting from page 8), Flood explains that there are three different schools of thought in how to define religion. Summarize these theories and discuss their strengths and weaknesses. These theories describe religion to be politics in the other way round, religion is a gene and defined religion to be a cultural response to life (Crockett 14). The first schools gave an illustration that based on the aesthetic reduction. The meaning of this is that religion is part of the cultural mechanism that makes sure that the transmission of genes to the other generations is successful. Explanation of how living being come into existence is specified in a range of constraint, this is the advantage of these theories. The limitation for this is that religious resources that pertain human lives in most instances went against the grain of some scholarships. Correct what Flood describes here with your own experience of religion. Does it resonate? Why or not? Basing on what Floods description, it does not resonate with my experience of religion. The reason behind this is that religions are a unifying, purifying, and holy dominion that brings people closer to God (Crockett 15). Floods highlight does not reveal the genesis of man. Instead, he relates with biological aspects that do not exist in the desired religion.

Evaluating practice through theories and models Essay - 1

Evaluating practice through theories and models - Essay Example He was being taken care of by his wife, who was elderly too. The patient had a history of heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. His condition was worsened by the fact that he had a low self-esteem, to a point that he wished himself death to unburden his family. He had difficulty in breathing caused by increased ultra filtration. He also had limited water intake because of his renal treatment. In addition to this, he had failed in maintaining his regular food and water balance because he refused to eat and drink. Renal failure also caused him to have difficulty in passing urine (OSU 2013). Mr. Lim depended on his wife and nurses to help him with his activity of daily living (ADL). Mr. Lim and his wife both lacked the critical knowledge of maintaining his condition. These include lack of the will to follow his regimen and dietary adjustments (NKF 2013). Also captured were the psychological effects of the disease on him, and his family’s lack of motivation characterized by depression of both of them. Mr. Lim was negatively affected by these circumstances, and his condition, as a result. Introduction of Orem’s self-deficit theory seemed the best option to get the patient and his family to cope with management of the patient’s condition. Both the patient and his wife were to be subjected to Orem’s self-deficit theory to enable them gain the appropriate knowledge that will benefit all of them. This is because their lack of knowledge of self-care management and supportive education that was essential in Mr. Lim’s management of his chronic condition (Curtin et. al. 2005). Orem’s self-deficit theory was applied, in this case, to improve the condition of Mr. Lim and the psychological well being of his wife. The program took about three months, and the results were encouraging. Mr. Lim was able to portray a positive aura, which was the most essential step in the road to his recovery. This

The American Revolution, Civil War and Reconstruction Essay

The American Revolution, Civil War and Reconstruction - Essay Example The interplay between African American and White elite’ history, alongside women’s movements and status can effectively bring out the themes of changing fortunes in relation to civil rights and dominance during the period under scrutiny. This study discusses the Civil War, the Reconstruction and the plights of African Americans, women and White elites during the period from the American Revolution to the Civil war. The thesis for the study is that the freedom spirit and equality as laid out in the Declaration of Independence were not maintained during this period. THE CIVIL WAR The American Civil War is one of the country’s stand-out points from a historical perspective. It is a fascinating aspect of American history in terms of the factors leading to the war, the course of the war and finally, its outcomes. As McPherson (2) explains, the Civil War broke out due to differences surrounding the right to engage in slavery between the free and slave states. According to Boyer et al. (443), both the North and South were largely unprepared for the war. This is discernible from the small armies existing at the beginning of the war and the lack of supportive structures for war. For instance, both sides lacked proper tax collection mechanisms, poor navies and underdeveloped railway lines. Boyer et al. argue that the first two years of the war involved the two sides heavily overcoming such deficiencies. The North and the South mobilized for war through conscription, rallying and budgetary allocations. The course of war was largely expected to swing in favor of the South (the Confederacy), as opposed to the North (the Union). Parallels with the American Revolution assured this, as the North faced the daunting task of forcing the South back to the Union while the South fought for independence. To subdue the South, the North had to be on the offensive, and that is over vast geographical areas. Although the Union was better equipped for war in terms of m ilitary size, railroad development and overall industrial development- its war resources paled in light of the just discussed challenge. The early course of the war made the South to win decisive victories and support (Boyer et al. 450-454). The main determinant of the outcome of the civil war revolved around the war picking the theme of independence especially in the North. This change in theme was to a large extent based on the qualities of the then President, Abraham Lincoln. McPherson (43) argues that, Lincoln’s abilities as a statesman and a politician alongside his steadfast stance on the value of the war, won support from the Northern population and ultimately the war itself. Grant and Reid (40) support this view, arguing that Lincoln made his analysis of the long term future of the USA known to all. He categorically viewed the US as either wholly free or wholly slave, and presented the Republican Party as inclined towards the extinction of slavery. Individuals against the war represented standing for slavery and vice versa. Thus, Lincoln effectively rallied the population, further helped by a stream of victories over the South (41). The exploits of the North’s generals- such as General Sherman- and the reelection of Lincoln effectively saw the North emerge victorious after four years of brutal war. Officially, slavery had ended and the North stepped in to govern the

Letter - Support Statment Veteran Claim Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Letter - Support Statment Veteran Claim - Essay Example These risks include disease contamination, assassinations or even death. Therefore, in order to protect them against these risks, the US through the Department of Veterans has initiated programs through which the veterans are forced to subscribe to for temporary immortality. The claim is for service connection for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH/ NAFLD), initially characterized as fatty liver and claimed as liver failure/ liver disease, as caused by medication from in-service (US Army) incurrence and/or aggravation of disease or injury due to the prescribed medications taken on a daily basis for an extended period of time for service-connected disabilities. I, _____________ (â€Å"The Veteran†) served on active duty with due diligence from 2003 to 2004 and during this period, I was treated with high doses of Ibuprofen 800mg and other medications for pain relief and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. VA Doctors restricted me from taking medication or adjusting to new medication due to NASH (for example: Ibuprofen was discontinued by Doctor Olesen Miami Hospital, Cymbalta was discontinued by Doctor Racha Washington DC, etc.) and this has been considered as a threat to my general well being. Over the years, I have been unable to perform and live to my expectations due to the medications that I took during the in-service. The side-effects to these medications are visible and their damage is imminent. As indicated earlier on, I have lost weight, my diet has been restructured and my budget has been strained due to the adoption of a new life. My NASH / LIVER Disease was established and recognized by the VA Hospitals in Miami, FL and Washington, DC and my doctors have recommended that my condition is worsening. In regards to risk factors that have affected progressively my liver disease, I have three that include my BMI 31.23 ( > 28 kg/m2), presence of fibrosis in my liver biopsy in 2010, and my current elevated AST

Thanatos and Eros in The Death of Salesmas Play Assignment

Thanatos and Eros in The Death of Salesmas Play - Assignment Example In Death of Salesman the betrayal of love is evidenced when Willy betrays the love of Linda as well as the trust of Biff with his affair. Willy, as the main love betrayer, is preoccupied by some fear of love betrayal. He frequently accuses Biff being spiteful. This only reflects his understanding of the failure of Biff in business to be a rejection of his own dreams that he will be successful, and more importantly that the inability of Biff to keep the job safe is related to the love affair of Willy. The death of a salesman also has some elements of Thanatos, the drive of dying. Willy is not happy in his life and in the middle of a night, he is talking to himself very loudly that everybody wakes up. Linda his wife admits to their sons that as their parents they are financially struggling. Moreover, Willy, their father, has been on a suicide attempt mission. We clearly see the drive of death instinct-Thanatos operating strongly is the death of the salesman. Willy is unhappy with his l ife and he let the drive to kill himself overwhelms him. We see Happy and Biff returning home after their dates and they find Linda, their mother was waiting for them to arrive. Linda is fuming mad that her sons have left their Willy at the restaurant. This results to a massive argument and everybody is not interested in listening to Biff. However he still manages to put his point across- he find it difficult to live up to Willy`s, his dad, unrealistic expectations. He therefore basically considers his dad just a failure. The fight ends and Willy realizes that Biff, despite considering him a failure, he still seems to really care and love him. It`s unfortunate that Willy cannot get beyond the "failure" bit and he thinks the biggest contribution that he perhaps can make toward Biff`s success is just to commit suicide. He hope that by doing away with his life is the best way Biff could make use of the life insurance cash to perhaps start a business. The drive of love, Eros is definite ly taking stage in the death of a salesman. There is some considerably high level of love within Willy`s family.

RAW #4 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

RAW #4 - Essay Example Bell shows this through Philips’ conversation in which he postulates that Constitutive communism formed the basis upon which Nazism was propelled in the old times. He posits that it is an idea that cannot thrive in the modern society where people have continually integrated in one universal community (Bell 95). He postulates that due to the unrealizable ideal of Gemeinschaft there has been deliberate and continuous movement of the societal ties to the new and modern world Gesselshaft. He buys the idea that communitarianism is a barbaric venture that is both dangerous and archaic (Bell 99). He further potent that the Gemeinschaft ideals are simply unrealizable in the contemporary societies where the growth and concentration of capitalism has led to the breaking up of traditional small scale societal ties so much so that the implementation of communitarianism is simple impossible (Bell 100). He postulates that Gemeinschaft ideals have become static as people of today do not just assume and fulfill socially given obligations as before. The dichotomy as presented my Philip is challenged by Anne who thinks that in the contemporary society, people think of themselves neither as undifferentiated communitarians existing in self-sufficient and small villages nor as self-secluded and modern people. It is shown by Anne that even in the modern society, people still have communal attachments and peoples’ loyalties do stretch to more than one community but to families, home-towns and nations (Bell 99). It is important for the contemporary people to appreciate the fact that we do identify with not only our communities but with many communities in our lives. She brings out a clear knowledge that communitarians due place special interests on communal life. The justification for communitarian ideal emphasizes on the experience that people bound up with our lives in particular communities in which we live (Bell

The character of her husband was a true test to her faith. His temper was said to be violent and he was observed to have been of dissolute habits, making Monica's married life far from being a happy one (Pope Hugh). Patricius was also written to have given to adultery while married to Monica. Patricius was written to have been annoyed with Monica’s alms deeds and habit of prayer (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). Saint Monica also received quite an amount of hurts from her mother in-law who seemed to dislike her (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Monica was living in a society with prevalent domestic violence, but something in Monica made her different from the rest of the women and she enjoined them to follow her steps. What made Monica survive the tests of faith and why she was able to convert her husband and her children to faith in Christianity? During the difficult times that Monica was facing, she did not rebelled against God. Her situation seemed to have brought her closer to God rather than away from him. "Monica attended church daily and cultivated the virtue of patience" (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Her advice to the other advised other wives, who were beaten was to hold their tongues around their husbands, rather than proudly withstand them (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Her virtue was that of submission of obedience, as Saint Augustine, her son said that although domestic violence was prevalent that time, her mother was never beaten by his father because of her obedience (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Specifically, she was quoted saying "If you can master your tongue, not only do you run less risk of being beaten, but perhaps you may even, one day, make your husband better" (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). These virtues and wisdom, in addition to her sweetness and patience made her exercise a veritable apostolate am ong the wives and mother in her community. Monica bore her burdens patiently that's why even though her husband was causing her pain, their life together was relatively peaceful (Women for Faith & Family). She also continued with helping other people despite the resistance from her husband. It was because she exercised the power of prayer that she was able to withstand the temptations to be in despair and to rebel against her husband. Through much prayer, she was able to convert her husband into Christianity a year before he died. It took her 30 years to pray for her husband (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). It was such a marvellous victory for Saint Monica. More victoriously, she was also able to win her mother-in law through her gentleness, respectfulness and patience (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Aside from being patient, gentle, obedient, respectful and fervent in prayer, Monica showed persistence in asking help for her son. It was written that Monica asked help from a bishop who also used Manichaean before he became a Christian for several times although she was always rejected. In the end, the bishop consoled Monica saying, "the child of those tears shall never perish" which she took as a sign from God (Women for Faith & Family). Monica's persistence was shown more dramatically when she followed her wayward and dissolute son

Country’s economy Essay Example for Free

Country’s economy Essay These are goods that cannot be provided by the private sector but are very essential to the development of a country’s economy. They are usually very expensive undertakings with fewer returns or take a long time for the investors to recoup their money back. This makes them to be less attractive to the private sector investors who are mainly driven by the profit motive and would thus be unwilling to invest their resources in such projects. The government has the mandate of providing such goods that are very essential which have indivisible cost with a marginal cost of zero (Kaul, 2006). It is not possible to practically charge the public for the utilizing such goods. The government can therefore, only collect taxes from the public to enable it provide public goods. Public goods in this category include roads and state security provided by the policemen who are paid by the government. There are other public goods that even though, they have high returns and the private sector can be able to invest in them, they cannot be allowed to do so by the government due to the amount of risk involved. Manufacturing or trading of weapons is a risky activity that no government can be willing to allow it to be done by the private sector as it would put the public into a lot of risk since the private sector investors in such an industry would mostly be guided by the profit motive and not whether or not ammunitions will be on the wrong hands or the right ones (Kaul, 2006). The public goods are very important to everyone, including the private investors who shy away from investing their resources in such ventures. It is this importance that makes the government to be under obligation of providing such goods to its people since they are very essential and it is only the government that is best placed to provide them (Kaul, 2006). Innovation in Engineering Technology

Innovation in Engineering Technology Innovation in Engineering Technology India is known in the world for its manpower in the field of scientists and researchers. UNESCO in 2003 emphasized that â€Å"Education in a globalised society should ensure equality of access and request cult al diversity as well as national sovereignty. Globalization and internet has given a new face to our education system. The need of the millennium is to produce trained, responsible and well informed people committed to working for the betterment of the country’s future. It is a proven fact that â€Å"Engineering Education† forms the foundation on which future of the country is dependent upon. The main aim of this journal is to highlight different ideas of innovation in the field of engineering The first idea suggested is changing the education scenario. The main problem in our education scenario is the lack of qualified teachers, infrastructure, research and training-learning process. No doubt steps are being taken to overcome this problem. Now nineteen percent of the budget is allocated for education which used to be 7.7 percent in previous years. Moreover in India only twelve percent students go for higher education after completing their secondary education which is very less than the number in developed countries in which the number is around 70 percent. Another main alarm is the vocational training that needs to be given to a large no of people in our country. For providing excellence in teaching, research activities should be introduced. It is the need of every teacher. It encourages new ideas and innovations and helps in making the educational atmosphere enthusiastic. The education imparted by institutions will not be efficient, unless they adopt research and innovation. Worlds standard Engineering education include research and patenting including IPR related issues. These things enable students to learn skills of innovation and use these new technologies for solving current problems, which is very much essential to live in such a competitive world. Promoting meaningful, engaged learning with the precise use of new technology provides students the chance to interact with the wealth of resources. India is a place with bunch of manpower but lacks in teaching standards and resources due to which the economic growth and literacy rate of India is decreasing at a very rapid rate and the development of the country is almost negligible every year. Education institutions are facing a lot of challenges in providing us with cream students i.e. students who can succeed in this competitive world because of lack of qualified resources and subjects which make the students capable in the present hour. Some of the suggestions for improving the quality of education is firstly we need to change the scenario of education. Qualified teachers should be there in colleges with proper infrastructure and facilities. Moreover in addition to this research activities should be introduced in the studies to make the students capable for worldwide competition. Government should also help the institutions by providing funds for the same and encouraging students to go for higher studies for the future of the mselves and our country. Effective Usage of Libraries through Internet-A View Point Library is the place where one could find all the information needed for any use. All over the world they play a vital role in our life and for our higher education. Internet plays an important role in providing the information for its user in a larger way. One of the newest technology introduced in the libraries for finding out data is the use of computers. Though with this technology information is readily accessible to the users, many a times the information provided is not relevant. Because of this problem many users are not satisfied with data provided on internet. Due to this problem the main objective of the library is not satisfied. In this I am going to discuss some of the problems and solutions for the same. There are a number of users who use the library daily to search about one topic or the other. There are users from different categories and different age groups. These include school and college going students, graduates, scientists, doctors, planners, library staff, and academic staff etcetera. Nowadays people prefer surfing net for the information they require then finding that in books and journals by reading. For this purpose a large number of search engines are available. Whenever users enter any required keyword, search engines show all the queries related to that keyword from their database. Around one lakh links are shown for a single query. But the main dis-advantage of finding information on the internet is that in spite of a large number of links provided to each query, not even a single link is relevant for the user. This may be because for each query the search engines try to find out all the information corresponding to that query. The main advantage of using computers in library was time saving but due to this problem, it has turned into the main disadvantage. Now a lot of time of the user is spent in locating the exact information from the available web pages. The main solution for the above mentioned problem is the classification system. All the information provided on the internet should classify under one area or the other. By using this technique users will be provided with only the relevant data instead of a bulk of waste. Hence surfing internet will provide only relevant data to its users. This technique can also be integrated in search engines. They will generate unique classification number corresponding to the users query and search for that particular information equivalent to that number on the internet. Technology has taken a new face and the necessities of users are changing as per the advancement in the technology. So it is the need of hour to integrate the new technology for the ease of users. Seeking the disadvantage of this new technology we need to rectify it so as this technology proves to be a boon for. Also all the main objectives of libraries are satisfied and users gets information easily and at very fast speed. Challenges in achieving excellence in technical education The main key behind success and development of a society is education. Our country is developing very fast and is also far away from being called developed. India has improved technologically and economically in the field of agriculture, providing nuclear power, space technology, and defense etcetera. Mobile technology is growing tremendously in India. It is the need of the hour that the present generation i.e. the youngsters should be aware of the talents, aptitude so that they can create wonders in their field of interest. Moreover we need to unleash their creative potential by helping them do what they want to do. Due to complete transformation in the technology, there has been an increasing expectation for higher education in order to level up with the present technology. Unqualified and dearth of faculty is responsible for the loss of quality education. The graduates passed out from such institutions have to sit unemployed for large time increasing the unemployment rate of the country. Against this problem the National Knowledge Commission (NKT) has taken steps in order to build excellence in educational system so as to meet the knowledge requirements of 21st century and to increase India’s competitive knowledge and also to improve the management of institutions under Intellectual Property Rights. The center point of quality education and learning is teachers. Nothing can ever replace a good teacher. The core of our engineering education policies should be teacher training and retention. Other thing that effects quality education is capacity and competence building. India has got second position in Global Innovation Efficiency index. India’ s labor force is growing at 2.5% per annum while the employment growth rate is 2.3% only. After teachers it is the role of education institutes in shaping our country’s future. Maintaining international quality of engineering institutions in India is the main aim of ISTE. Under the financial assistance from AICTE innovative programs like faculty development are started by ISTE at express rate. National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) is a mission initiated for providing connectivity, low cost computing device and valuable contents to all the higher education institutes in India. Proper definition of innovation should be taught to the students as the commercialized way of solving problems with advanced technologies. The global leader for research was India with 159 research areas in the five year span of 2006 to 2010. Engineering education in our country should be designed in such a way so that the engineers can fight with the trained manpower in solving technical as well as social problems. India has got a positive growth rate in the beginning of year 2012 that to with a very rapid rate. It is the most favorable place for the Multi National Companies (MNC’s) to invest. The rapid rate of increasing urbanization and industrialization is acting as a catalyst towards the growth of India. It highlights how all the things stated above can be bring to action in order to meet the challenges faced by engineers in our country. References: R. Literature Review Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Health And Social Care Essay

Literature Review Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Health And Social Care Essay Review of literature is an essential step in the development of a research project. The primary purpose is to gain abroad background or understanding of the information that is related to the research problem. Review of literature of the present study was arranged in the following heading: Review related to polycystic ovarian syndrome. Review related to prevalence Review related to Quality of life Review related to risk factors. Review related to treatment. . Review related to poly cystic ovarian syndrome. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein Leventhal Syndrome, was first described in 1935. PCOS, which may also be referred to as polycystic ovary disease (PCOD) is the most common hormonal disorder found in premenopausal women. PCOS affects 7% of women from all races and nationalities. Typically, PCOS symptoms first appear in adolescence, normally around the state of menstruation. Occasionally, some women do not develop PCOS symptoms until their early to mid-20s. One of the most common symptoms of PCOS is irregular periods. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) becomes symptomatic during adolescence and affects at least 5% of reproductive-age women. PCOS is a heterogeneous syndrome of unexplained chronic hyperandrogenism and oligo-anovulation, with a polycystic ovary being an alternative diagnostic criterion. About half of cases lack some of the classic Stein-Leventhal syndrome features of menstrual irregularity, hirsutism, obesity, and polycystic ovaries. Whether the syndrome can be diagnosed in the absence of hyperandrogenism is controversial, and the documentation of hyperandrogenemia can be problematic. The broad spectrum of the disorder seems to encompass atypical cases of hyperandrogenemia with central obesity and features of insulin resistance instead of hirsutis m or anovulation. Functional ovarian hyperandrogenism (FOH) is usually the source of the androgen excess. It is characterized by 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17PROG) hyperresponsiveness to the gonadotropin stimulation of GnRH agonist or human chorionic gonadotropin testing and subnormal suppressibility of plasma testosterone upon adrenal suppression by glucocorticoid. It is often accompanied by functional adrenal hyperandrogenism, characterized by 17-hydroxypregnenolone or dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) hyperresponsiveness to ACTH; in atypical PCOS, the sole source of androgen excess may be functional adrenal hyperandrogenism. The underlying defect seems to be a constitutive dysreglulaton of steroidogenic cells (9). Intrinsic granulosa cell dysfunction is also present. LH excess appears to contribute to 50-75% of cases. Evidence is accumulating that it arises from androgen interfering with the progesterone negative-feedback effect on LH secretion. However, the possibility of primary central mechanisms for L H excess remains, particularly in adolescent PCOS . Increasing evidence suggests that PCOS arises as a complex trait with contributions from both heritable and nonheritable factors. Polygenic influences appear to account for about 70% of the variance in pathogenesis. Nearly half of sisters of women with PCOS have an elevated plasma testosterone level, although only half of them are symptomatic. Polycystic ovaries appear to be transmitted as a dominant trait, usually asymptomatic but often accompanied by a subclinical PCOS type of ovarian dysfunction. Central obesity and insulin resistance seem to play important roles in PCOS, perhaps by accentuating steroidogenic dysregulation but perhaps more fundamentally because PCOS is closely related to these features in parents. Gestational factors have also been incriminated; the syndrome has been associated with high birth weight in heavy mothers and can arise from fetal programming by androgen excess. In view of these indications for congenital origins of the syndrome, it is not surprising th at there is increasing recognition of risk factors for PCOS in childhood Minerva Pediatr (2010) Polycystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder, involving primarily ovarian hyperandrogenism in females and linked with insulin resistance in the majority of cases. Clinical features are widely variable and include a combination of menstrual irregularities, acne, hirsutism, and alopecia. Although it typically presents around puberty, several risk factors during childhood may help raise a high index of suspicion for the development of PCOS in adolescents. The pathophysiology of PCOS still remains unknown and likely includes a combination of genetic factors, insulin resistance and environmental factors. A thorough diagnostic work up is required in suspected cases and several management modalities have been suggested. Since various long term complications and comorbidities are associated with PCOS early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention is warranted in these cases. Review Related To Prevalence Pembe AB, Abeid MS (2009). The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of polycystic ovaries (PCO) and associated clinical and biochemical features among women with infertility attending gynaecological outpatients department (GOPD) at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. All women with infertility attending the GOPD from 11th September 2006 to 15th February 2007 were recruited to the study. Information on socio-demographic, obstetric and menstrual characteristics was collected. Anthropometric measurement, clinical examination of acne and hirsutism, vaginal ultrasonography for PCO and biochemical analysis of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone were performed all 102 women who attended the GOPD during the study period due to infertilityw ere recruited. Two women were excluded after diagnosis of pregnancy made by hormonal assay and ultrasonography thus remaining with 100 women for analysis. Oligomenorrhoea and acne were significantly higher in a group of women with PCO than among women with normal ovaries. The mean hirsutism score though was not significant, was higher in women with PCO than in women with normal ovaries (5.1 +/-2.7 vs 4+/-2.4, P Koivunen R. (1999) conducted study about prevalence of polycystic ovaries in healthy women. The prevalence of polycystic ovaries varies with age. The findings are more common in women aged 35 years or younger than in those aged 36 years or older. It remains unclear of women with polycystic ovaries will later develop fall-blown polycystic ovary syndrome; however, the hormonal parameters and clinical findings among women with polycystic ovaries mimized those will polycystic ovarian syndrome. Enhrman DA, Cavagham MK, Barnes RB, (1999) prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome have the highest risk of glucose intolerance. Among women with polycystic ovary syndrome, 35% will have impaired glucose tolerance and 10% will be diabetic before age 40. Hyperandrogenemia may have a role in the development of glucose intolerance or be a marker of insulin resistance. Conversion from impaired glucose tolerance to NIDDM appears to be accelerated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Review related to quality of life Moran L, el.a.l (2010) conducted a observational, cross sectional study in young woman. He assess the psychological features in young women with and without PCOS. Women with PCOS demonstrated worsened quality of life (p=0.033 ) and greater anxiety (p= 0.01)and depression (p=0.023) than women without PCOS related to BMI status. Women with PCOS were more likely to perceive themselves as at risk of obesity (p=0.012) and infertility (p=0.0001), and perceived greater importance in reducing future risk of prediabetes (p=0.027), gestationl diabetes (p=0.039),type2 diabetes (p= 0.01) , heart disease (p=0.005),obesity(p=0.0007),and infertility(p=0.023) than women without PCOS. Women with PCOS were more likely to have fears about future health related to weight gain (p=0.045 ), loss of femininity (p =0.035) , loss of sexuality (p =0.003) and infertility (p=0.019) than women without PCOS. Worsened quality of life, anxiety and depression in young women with PCOS is related to BMI. Risk percepti on is appropriately high in PCOS, yet perceived risk of future metabolic complications are less common than those related to weight gain and infertility. Judy Griffin Mc Cook, et al conducted on a cross sectional, regarding quality of life in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. The results of this study indicate that women with PCOS have the greatest concern in the area of weight, followed by menstrual problems and infertility. These concerns are directely reflected in their objective life experiences. Women with PCOS clearly need education and support regarding the effect of their quality of life. Sigrid elsenbruch el.al They conducted a survey method the sample was collected from out patients clinics of the devision of endocrinology ,department of medicine at the university of essen, based on referrals from gynecologists in the surrounding area or patients attracted by the clinics home page. They concluded that the pronounced psychological and psychosocial problems affecting health related to quality of life of patients with PCOS. Although an effective medical treatment aimed at improving PCOS related symptoms will also reduce psychological distress and improve sexual self worth , consideration of both the medical and psychological situation with the availability of an additional help group are likely to further improve life satisfaction and coping of affected women. Maria E el. al conducted a cross sectional study of female adolescents and to determine whether clinically observed or self -perceived severity of illness attect their HRQL (Health related quality life) they concluded that adolescents with PCOS experience lower HRQL compared with healthy adolescents. Polycystic ovarian syndrome and perceived severity of illness negatively affect HRQL in adolescents. This study suggests a need to develop interventions to reduce the distress that patients with PCOS may face to adolescents and young adult. Susanne Hahn, el. al A Comparative study was conducted in out patient clinic of The Department Of Medicine, university of Duisburg Essen, Germany. The result of the study was PCOS patients showed significant reductions in quality of life, increased psychological disturbances, and decreased sexual satisfaction when healthy controls. BMI and hirsutism scores, but not the presence of acne , were associated with physical aspect of quality of life and sexual satisfaction. No clear effect of androgens or insulin resistance on psychosocial variables was detected. Similarly, the type of menstrual cycle disturbances or infertility had no impact on psychological well being. Review related to risk factors Robert L. Rosenfield et al 2007 in this study state that risk factors for PCOS can be recognized in childhood. This study concluded that premature pubarche patients appear to carry about a 15 -20 % risk of developing PCOS. It seems likely that the risk is relatively high in those with exaggerated adrenarche and relatively low in those with ordinary premature adrenarche or idiopathic premature pubarche. PCOS is a complex trait with a large hereditary component. There fore, the presence of PCOS, or central obesity, diabetes, or other insulin resistant features in a parent should heighten the concern about risk for PCOS if the child presents other risk factors. Bulent O. Yildiz, et.al (2005) The study was conducted at a tertiary care center. Population prevalence of PCOS according to body mass index (BMI) and change in BMI of PCOS patients over time were measured. The results suggest that the risk of PCOS is only minimally increased with obesity, although the degree of obesity of PCOS patients has increased, similar to that observed in the general population. These data indicate that obesity in PCOS reflects environmental factors to a great extent. Meher un Nisal (2009) A cross sectional analytical study was conducted in Qassim University Clinic, in the year of 2007 -2009 . They concluded that obesity plays an important role in the genesis and maintenance of polycystic ovarian disease. PCOD is the leading cause of anovultory infertility in females and affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. PCOD is strongly associated with obesity. Angela Kerchner, B.A., el .al (2009) coducted a prospective longitudinal study cocluded that there is a significant risk mood disorders in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. The persistent high rate of depression and other mood disorders are presents in young women with PCOS. Rosenfield RL. The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics (2007) conducted a study on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) appears to arise as a complex trait with contributions from both heritable and nonheritable factors. Polygenic influences appear to account for about 70% of the variance in pathogenesis. In view of this evidence for congenital contributions to the syndrome, childhood manifestations may be expected. The objective has been to review the evidence that risk factors for PCOS can be recognized in childhood. Congenital virilizing disorder are average or low birth weight for gestation age; premature adrenarche, particularly exaggerated adrenarche; atypical sexual precocity; or intractable obesity with acanthosis nigricans, metabolic syndrome, and pseudo-cushing syndrome or pseudo-acromegaly in early childhood have been identified as independent prepubertal risk factors for the development of PCOS. During adolescence, PCOS may masquerade a s physiological adolescent anovulation. Asymptomatic adolescents with a polycystic ovary occasionally (8%) have subclinical PCOS but often (42%) have a subclinical PCOS type of ovarian dysfunction, the prognosis for which is unclear. Identifying children at risk for PCOS offers the prospect of eventually preventing some of the long-term complications associated with this syndrome once our understanding of the basis of the disorder improves. Fertile steril (2009) conducted a prospective longitudinal study in university they state that there is a significant risk for mood disorders in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. They found that a high conversion risk for depression over a 1 to 2 year period under scores the importance of routine screening and aggressive treatment of mental health disorders in this population. Duleba AJ, Ahmed IM (2010) observational study to evaluate urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in normotensive and non diabetic women with polycystic ovary syndrome in relation to their clinical, endocrine, and metabolic motiles. They concluded urinary albumin exenetion in women with pcos correlates well with other cordiovcescular events is continuous, evaluation of UAE in the presence of information and may aid in selecting appropriate patients for move aggressive treatment of likely aggravation factors, such as hyperonsulinemia or borderline hypertension. Want Y, et.al says that the family history of diabetes mellitus has the most effect on the clinical phenotype in women with PCOS. The family history of other diseases such as menstrual disorder, premature balding and hypertension play less significant roles. A family history of positive coronary heart disease does not affect the clinical phenotype of such patients. A survey of the polycystic ovary syndrome in the Greek island of Lesbos: hormonal and metabolic profile. Review related to Treatment Moran LJ, Pasquali R, (2009) state that the lifestyle management should be used as the primary therapy in overweight and obese women with PCOS for the treatment of metabolic complications. Jeans YM, et.al (2009) they conducted a experimental study on dietary management of women with PCOS. They concluded that 73% of overweight women were not following a diet to promote weight loss. Humphreys L, costarelli V (2008). They concluded that in spite of the fact that weight loss and weight maintenance are absolutely vital in the treatment the PCOS. In their study bees shown that the support given to PCOS patients to help reduce and control their weight is inadequate and needs to be improved. Hector F Escobar et.al. (2008). They done a case control study including 40 PCOS patients matched with 40 non hyperandrogenic women for age and body mass index. They concluded that serum OPG (Osteoprotegerin) concentrations are reduced in PCOS patients independently of obesity. Unlu C. Atabe koglu CS. (2006). They suggest that the metformin has gained popularity as first line management in clomiphone citrate resistant women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. It ovulation does not occur within several months offer treatment with metformin, affer the evaluation of all PCOS and cons related to each treatment. Laparoscopic ovarian drilling or gonadotropins may be considered as an effective option according to patients choice. Glueck CJ, et. Al. (2009 Sep) conduct a study: in 20 adolescents age, or = 17(16+/- 1 yr) with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endocrinopathy and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors. Median weight fell from 85.5 to 78.4 kg(p=0.004), waist circumference from 91 to 84 cm (p= 0.017), triglyceride form 108 to 71 mg/dl (p=0.026), and testosterone from 45.5 to 31.5ng/dl (p=0.03). The percentage of cycles with normal menses rose from a pre-treatment median of 8% to 100 %, p Genazzani AD, Ricchieri F, Lanzoni C conducted a study in metformin is quite an old drug, but it is optimal for the control of glycemia in type 2 diabetes. It was reported, 15 years ago, that insulin resistance was abnormally high in most polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. Starting disorder over 2 years after menarche, a higher incidence of obesity, marked hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance and disorderly gonadotropine secretion in comparison with control subjects. Hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance are much more severe in obese adolescent PCOS. Beata Banasjewska MD Ph.D., Antoni J Duleba MD, Robert Z. Spacjynski, Lipids in polycystic ovarian syndrome Role of hyperinsulinemia and effects of metformin.Use of metformin in hyperinsulinemia women with PCOS is associated with a significant improvement of lipid profile; these findings support the notion that metformin use may be considered prophylactic therapy aimed at lowering cardiovascular risk factors. Jeans YM et al (2009) conducted a study related to dietary management of women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Advice provided by dietitians focused on a reduction in energy intake (78%) and dietary glycaemic index (77%) often in combination. Of the women with poly cystic ovarian syndrome who were following a diet specifically for their poly cystic ovarian syndrome (57%) regimes included a low glycaemic index (34%), weight loss diets (16%) or a combination (26%). Of interest, 73% of overweight women were not following a diet with only 15% of women having seen a dietitian. Eighty-four percent of women with poly cystic ovarian syndrome who had increased physical activity (48%) self-reported an improvement in their symptoms. They concluded that women with poly cystic ovarian syndrome recognize the importance of diet, but few received dietary advice from a registered dietitian. The dietary information women with poly cystic ovarian syndrome received was often from an unregulated source. A consensus statement of evidence-based dietary advice for women with poly cystic ovarian syndrome is needed and would be a useful resource for dietitians.

Career Integration Research Assignment: Athletic Training Essay

The field of athletic training is one of the fastest expanding careers today. This could be due to the much greater demand for health care providers. Athletic trainers specialize in preventing, diagnosing, and treating muscle and bone injuries. They work with a diverse group of patients, from young children to professional athletes. Athletic trainers are usually part of a sport medicine team, which tend to include a physician, physical therapist, and even a sport psychologist. Many athletic trainers work in educational facilities, such as high schools and colleges. However, much of their time is spent on the sport fields. The profession applies their wide range of medical knowledge; and in order to do so, athletic trainers must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to converse with the athletes, coaches, physicians, and parents (Occupational outlook handbook, 2012). Athletic trainers are mainly responsible for injury recovery and injury prevention. However, these responsibilities are physical concerns, but what about the mental concerns? There is a movement within the athletic training field to approach sport injuries with a more holistic perspective. Many athletic trainers have had inadequate education in sport psychology to institute any sort of psychological initiative in their rehabilitation programs. This paper will discuss some of the prospective ideas and various methods of rehabilitation tactics that could be used in the field, as well as how to perhaps properly train athletic trainers to administer these mental treatments, along with the physical treatments. These mental treatments will be related back to sport and exercise psychology concepts, such as strategies for setting realistic goals, methods for enc... .... (2009). Place Strategy for Dairy Farmers Milk :: Business Management Studies

Place Strategy for Dairy Farmers Milk Current situation I do the research in Woolworths supermarket of the maquarie shopping center. When I enter into the supermarket, The first products I saw are the fresh vegetable and fruits, such as banana, strawberry, apple, etc. on the left is the fresh bread aisle, and there is a single aisle which provide the valued produces. Walk along the bread shelves, then I see the deli which sale lunchmeat, bacon and the like. When you turn right, you can see the frozen area, customers can choose refrigerated items here, and White milk fridge is on the left end, just near the deli. In Woolworths Home Brand is placed in the left, Pura is in the middle of the fridge, and they provide full cream milk, skim milk, and Lite milk, In the right section is Dairy Farmers, And they only provide Dairy Farmers Best, 1 liter, 2 liter, and Lite White, 2litre, That means a range of limited pack sizes and categories for consumes to choose. The fridge is divided into 4 shelves, on the top is the Skim Milk with small pack size, the second is displaced with 1lt milk, the third is 2lt milk, and the bottom is the 3lts. Opposite the frozen area there are 12 aisles displace products from food to shampoo, and even garden care. Competition Direct competition ================== Since the Home Brand and ‘Woolworths’ is the Woolworths own-brands, supermarkets are all considering rationalizing the name brands they stock and supporting their own house brand, they put their products on the most eye-catching place to attract customers’ attention, and provide a range of pack size for customers, While dairy farmers products are less obvious, and they do not provide 3lt pack size on the bottom shelf. There are just 1lt and 2lt milk on the first and second level in the right fridge, Woolworths only stock my competitions’ products, the reason is obvious: they can make more money from that product than they would from a big manufacturer. The direct competitor of Woolworths is Franline, this supermarket is also located on level 3, and it’s near the parking place, So it’s more convenient for customer who drive a car for shopping. Indirect competition ==================== Opposite the White milk fridge is the flavored milk aisle, juice and tea aisle, etc. shoppers have multiple choices when they feel thirsty. There is a food court on level 3, and more than 15 caf © shops are located in this shopping center, since some customers of the shopping center are students and staff of nearby office towers, when they find some drinks, they can choose many items besides milk.

Political Philosophy and Machiavelli Essay

Niccolo Machiavelli’s essay, â€Å"The Qualities of the Prince† is a very interesting piece of literary work that has an atypical way of depicting the qualities of a successful leader. Machiavelli developed a way of thinking that changes the human perspective on what a quality leader is made of. He took what people were afraid to say aloud and voiced it in a way that almost unraveled the truth about what people in power were really like. Machiavelli comes to a junction is his essay when he writes; â€Å"being disarmed makes you despised†. When Machiavelli says this he means to say that in order for someone to appear powerful they must be armed and physically capable of warfare. In his essay he very clearly portrays that in order for someone to have control and ultimate power, they must have the means to start a war. Machiavelli makes the point in his essay that people are ultimately naà ¯ve and easily manipulated and that in order to be an exceptional leader, you must be unafraid to do what’s necessary to survive the political wilderness. This is not to say that you should go about your power abusing it because you have the power to, but rather use it in situations when it is necessary. He also says that it is more important to be feared then loved but not too feared because then people may get the idea to over throw you. I found this essay quite radical but very interesting. I think that although I wish it weren’t true, that most politicians today have this sort of mindset. I believe this piece of literary work to be the most contradicting of Machiavelli’s time.

The concept of Bhakti entails

The aim of this paper is to examine master(prenominal) beliefs of Bhagavad Gita and either agree or take issue with them. Concepts examined in this paper atomic number 18 Karma, Bhakti, Samsara, Moksha, Dharma, and the tercet Gunas. The concept of Karma means that a individual should follow his or her duty wi geet idea of the rewards for his or her actions. Bhagavad Gita teaches the pursuit Therefore, without being aband 1 and merely(a)d to the fruits of activities, superstar should act as a matter of duty, for by working without altogetheriance iodin attains the Supreme (Verse 19, Chapter 3).I agree to this concept, since unearthly purity is only attainable finished self-sacrifice in the name of the Divine. crying(a) preoccupations, such as attaining benefits for yourself by acting in a accepted way, fight down the nature of trust, which c whollys for obedience and commitment to whizs duty. Every individual should go out the right path and stay patriotic to it. It will eliminate hesitation preceding to action and render more legitimacy to ones deeds. The concept of Karma isnt unique to Hinduism, since it is present in each major religion, yet in a different form.Following ones religion implies that down-to-earth consequences of actions matter less then(prenominal) those anticipated in the afterlife or subsequent incarnation. The concept of Karma is closed to the western sandwich notion of deontological ethics. Deontological ethics puts morality oer the consequences of an action. In fact, Kants Categorical Imperative is one of the most vivid examples of deontological thinking since it establishes a universal moral standard for each the gay being in all situations. The concept of Bhakti entails that there is an supreme ghostly expression, during which a person female genitalia encounter the highest degree of devotion to god and identify unity with God. The blurring of the earthy and divine suggests that a gather of God is p resent in every human, and the great unwashed should discover God inside them through seeking Bhakti. Bhagavad Gita says the following Abandon all varieties of religion and tho surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not venerate (Verse 66, Chapter 18).This concept suggests that religious idler leave alone ultimate guidance through life, and people should entrust themselves to God. Samsara is a cycle of changeover that is perceived as a ingrained fact of life. It means that soul is immortal, while human body fades away. Bhagavad Gita ssays the following For certain is death for the born, and certain is birth for the slain therefore over the inevitable thou shouldst not grieve (Verse 27, Chapter 2). This concept suggests that human should pay more attention to ghostly matters rather then momentary desires.Furthermore, it teaches a philosophical approach to death as something inevitable and followed by rebirth frankincense it is helpful in elimi nating fear of death, which results in a more liberated earthy life. Moksha means liberation from the cycle of rebirth through achieving a demesne of ultimate self-realization. There are four components of Moksha Shanti, Videh, Kaivalya and Swarga. Shanti is the sterling(prenominal) degree of peace and transcendence, which frees a human being from all the sufferings of earthy life. Videh is the friendship that comes together with Moksha it is the realization of self and the tenderness of the universe.Kaivalya is enlightenment every human should try for. Swarga is a notion that is close to the concept of paradise in other religions. I should agree with this concept, since ultimate understanding of ones true self is the only path to enlightenment. Self-realization can hike lead to self-actualization, and self-actualization is on the top of the call for pyramid. Maslows Hierarchy of Needs suggests there are several levels of human inevitably physiologic needs (need for air, war mth, food, sleep etc.), security needs (need for an absence of threat of various nature), social needs (needs for love and a adept of belonging), ego needs (needs for self- assess and respect from others), and self-actualization needs (the needs for purpose, personal harvest and realization of ones potentials). Therefore, the concept of Moksha in the whiz of a state of ultimate casualness and self-realization is close to Western psychological theories. Dharma is the concept of cosmic order vivacious in nature and human society. It can be interpreted as righteousness, which is a way to uphold union in the world. It is used to explain the complexity of the vocalize and the connection between God and nature. By agreeing to this concept one acknowledges the importance of capital of New Hampshire as the underlying value, both in nature and in term of uncanny harmony. Following the universal laws of conduct results in the absence of conflict and more complete life on Earth. As f or the tierce Gunas, they are Saatva (centered), Rajas (dynamic) and Tamas (inertia). In fact, these three Gunas absolutely reflect the nature of all processes.Saatva, which can be interpreted as harmony and purity, is a state that is different from both motion and inertia and signifies true piece of mind. Rajas, or energy and passion, reflects the ever-changing nature of the world. Tamas, or darkness and ignorance, refers to a state of inertia and motionlessness, both in corporal and phantasmal sense. This triad explains the path one should take to achieve Saatva through unleashing ones creative energy and avoiding spiritual inertia. References Easwaran, Eknath (trans. ) (2007).
